Taming the Monster:

A respected Christian leader confronts her hidden struggle

Taming the monster of anger.

Taming the angry monster.

Power for Living our Sunday morning Bible study handout recently talked about the problem of anger within. Author Kathy Collard Miller told of how she abused her daughter in anger. “It started with yelling and then I was spanking in anger and then it got to the point where I kicked Darcy and pushed her onto the floor.”

Everything changed including her marriage when she learned to trust God. “Larry was not the source of my happiness, contentment, and security. God was. He could give me everything I need.”

She talks about learning to trust God when things do not go as we wish. That way the love of God controls us, not fear, worry, and stress. Miller correctly realizes, “We have to truly believe that God is who He says He is- good and loving and kind. And that He is in complete control of every situation. We say to ourselves, ‘All things (except ___) work for good.’ Remember that God’s definition of good is that which draws us closer to Him.”

When we trust God to be God and leave no exceptions where we must be God, we can be freed from the anger of needing to control things ourselves. And we will find that God is using that which is not good to draw us to Himself and make us more like Jesus Christ.

“Emotions that aren’t dealt with, problems that go unresolved-they can lead to danger.” But when those same problems become the reason to trust and obey God, we change. Some problems disappear. And those that remain we see differently, for we no longer face them alone.

For more of the story, read Partly Cloudy with Scattered Worries by Kathy Collard Miller. Be honest, acknowledge God as God. Trust the promises of His word such as Romans 8:28. See Him do the same in and through your life, too!
