bible18.jpg The next meeting of the men’s class on Bible study methods will be 7 AM, Saturday, August 30. We will continue learning various methods of Bible study to better understand God’s Word. The assignment for the next class is to study a Bible doctrine (a teaching of the Bible on a specific subject). Even if you do not come to the study, you can learn and practice this method to grow and stay fresh in your study. Men can come without doing the assignment and still learn. But you will learn more if you take the time to study and practice this method.

Here is the assignment:

Related passages – Scripture is best understood in light of other scripture. Psalm 51 will be better understood in light of passages in I and II Samuel.

1. Read I Samuel 16: 1-13. Summarize what occurred in one sentence.

2. Read II Samuel 12: 1-23. Summarize what occurred in one or two sentences.

3. Read Psalm 51. Divide the chapter up into its natural divisions and summarize each or use the following suggested division.

  • a. Summarize verses 1 through 6 in one sentence.
  • b. Summarize verses 7 through 17 in one sentence.
  • c. Summarize verses 18 through 19 in one sentence.

4. What is the subject of Psalm 51? The subject is the answer to the question: What is this psalm talking about? This will be a word or phrase, not a full sentence (e.g. the subject of Luke 6:1-13 could simply be stated as: management. Expressed longer it is: management of the things of this world.)

5. What is the complement? The complement is the answer to the question: What is the psalm saying about the subject? This could be a phrase, not necessarily a full sentence. (e.g. the complement of Luke 6:1-13 could be expressed: manage to gain welcome in the eternal.)
6. Combine the subject and the complement to make a one sentence summary of what the psalm teaches (e.g. Manage the things of this world to gain eternal reward in the next.).

7. Answer the question: How does reading from I Samuel and II Samuel help to better understand Psalm 51?
The class lasts an hour or so. The pastor is also available to answer questions following the class.

We meet at the First Baptist Church of Perryville, MD. First Baptist Church is located in Cecil County on Route 40, 1 1/2 miles east of Route 222. We are on the south side of Route 40 almost across the road from the Principio Health Center. The easiest place to enter the building for this study is from the back parking lot behind the church building.
