Christmas

manger.jpg   The inn is full already; God’s Son lies in the hay–
O that my soul could enter  there and watch the night!
Come, earthly men, with earthly thought and sight,
Bondless  grace you win; in this straw thee weeps today
Who would ever weep for us; it were an idle pleasantry
To reverence a kingly cradle filled with straw.
In this crib there lies what the faithful longed to see
Who fulfills the Ages and shall our grief windraw.

God lies there in our flesh; God, fatherless on earth,
God motherless in His Divinity; the Co-Creative Word;
God, the Father of the maid who conceived and gave Him birth,

And lies now at her feet.  Here lies…But be spurred
My soul, no longer to rhyme your rough-hewn praise:
The fittest speech is but the silence of a humble gaze.

–Constantine Huygens (1596-1687)
