open Bible.jpg   The next Bible study methods class for men will be 7 AM, Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Perryville, MD. Even if you do not come to the study, you can learn and practice this method to grow and stay fresh in your study. Men can come without doing the assignment and still learn. But you will learn more if you take the time to study and practice this method.
This month’s Bible study method is about related passages.

Related passages – Scripture is best understood in light of other scripture. Matthew 4:1-11 will be better understood in light of passages in Deuteronomy.

1. Read Deuteronomy 8: 1-5. Summarize what it teaches in one or two sentences.

2. Read Deuteronomy 6: 13-17 (see Ex. 17:1-7 to remember Massah) . Summarize what it teaches in one or two sentences.

3. Read Matthew 4:1-11. Divide the section up into its natural divisions and summarize each or use the following suggested division.

a. Summarize verses 1 through 4 in one brief sentence.
b. Summarize verses 5 through 7 in brief sentence.
c. Summarize verses 8 through 11 in one brief sentence.
4. What is the subject of Matthew 4:1-11? The subject is the answer to the question: What is this passage talking about? This will be a word or phrase, not a full sentence (e.g. the subject of Luke 6:1-13 could simply be stated as: management. Expressed longer it is: management of the things of this world.)

5. What is the complement? The complement is the answer to the question: What is this passage psalm saying about the subject? This could be a phrase, not necessarily a full sentence. (e.g. the complement of Luke 6:1-13 could be expressed: manage to gain welcome in the eternal.)

6. Combine the subject and the complement to make a one sentence summary of what the passage teaches (e.g. Manage the things of this world to gain eternal reward in the next.).

7. Answer the question: How does reading from Deuteronomy help to better understand Matthew 4:1-11?

The training and discussion will be led by Kenny McMullen. The First Baptist Church is located in Cecil County, on Route 40, 1 1/2 miles east of Route 222. The church is across Route 40 from the new construction where the Principio Health Center is being built.

The Bible study will be held at the church in the back classroom on the second floor. Easiest access is to drive around the building to the back parking lot. Use the back door. The main entrance will also be open. Bring your Bible, a pen or pencil, and your notes or paper to take down what you learn. Dress is casual. The study will last about an hour, but Mr. McMullen will stay longer for any with additional questions.
