Our pastor began serving in youth ministry in 1970. In 1977 he served for two years directing a family center as a staff member for a Texas church. After two pastoral internships, he has pastored full-time since 1979. He briefly served FBC Perryville as an interim pastor in 1987. First Baptist Church, Perryville called Dr. John M. R. Gauger as pastor in 1990.
John and his wife, Linda, were married in 1977. They are thankful for the blessing of two children, John II and Paula. John II is married to Sarah. They are active for the Lord in Lynchburg, Virginia where they are raising their three sons, John-Paul, Jack, and Wills. Paula is married to Matthew Straw. They are active for the Lord in Lutherville, MD where they are raising their children, Ana Lee, Titus, and Eden.
John has degrees from the University of Delaware, Dallas Theological Seminary, and Drew University. He has done additional graduate work at Southern Methodist University, and the Christian Counseling Education Foundation at Westminster Seminary. John has been translated into ten other languages when preaching or teaching in North America, Middle America, Eastern Europe, Asia, and West Africa. He taught integrative seminars in Applied Ministry for the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in their extension graduate school at Columbia, MD since 2002. He has also taught pastors in Canada, Mexico, West Africa, and Eastern Europe. He now teaches the book of Romans for Liberty University online.
John has served in a variety of positions with organizations of churches working together. He served as president of the General Mission Board of the Baptist Convention of MD/DE, the Baptist Foundation of MD/DE, the Pastor’s Conference of the BCM/D, the Susquehanna Ministers and Wives Conference, and moderator of the Susquehanna Baptist Association. He has also twice served on the nominating committee of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Linda has degrees from the University of Delaware and the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. She has studied piano, organ, and harp professionally. She taught music at Joppatowne High School and many elementary schools in Harford County. Linda has directed choirs since her younger teens. She loves to cook and bake. John has always considered Linda the answer to God’s promise of good in Psalm 84:11.
John enjoys reading, marine aquaria, talking about God, and getting to know new people. He has strengths in teaching, training disciples, and counseling. His passion is to see people transformed by knowing God and enjoying Him. John’s desire is for the church to impact people locally, in our state, our nation, and other people throughout the world.
