Marriage: Evangelistic Sustainer of Love

marriage.jpg  31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.

Divorce’s Forgotten Victims

divorce.jpg  During the 1970s, a gaggle of supposed experts argued that divorce had few, if any, negative effects on children. One scholar wrote that divorced mothers could enjoy the “development of better relationships with [their] children” while two others said absent fathers were easily replaced.1 But today, social scientists are revising their opinions. They realize that children of divorce are more likely than their counterparts in intact families to drop out of high school, become pregnant as teenagers, and spend time in prison.2 University of Virginia marriage authority W. Bradford Wilcox noted that “[s]ocial-science data about the consequences of divorce have moved many scholars across the political spectrum to warn against continuing the divorce revolution, and to argue that intact families are essential, especially to the well-being of children.”3 (more…)

Those Toxic Non-Attenders

Matt Schmucker.jpg  By Matt Schmucker

Growing up I always heard that it was better to be accused of committing a sin of omission than a sin of commission. That way, you could always chalk your sin up to forgetfulness, ignorance or thoughtlessness. The sin of commission was the bigger no-no since it appeared deliberate and calculated. (more…)

God’s Purpose for the Family Transcends Economics

family.jpg  In 1860, something remarkable happened. The California Supreme Court ruled that, in the case of divorce, mothers should be granted custody of their children. Prior to this, courts awarded custody—by default—to the fathers.1 In their decision, the justices affirmed what had only just become the prevailing wisdom: mothers are caretakers, fathers breadwinners. However, at the start of the eighteenth century such a clean division of labor was foreign to the typical American family; in an agricultural, trade-based economy, men, women, and children shared many responsibilities—on and off the field.2 What changed? Christians Be Christian, As Salt Is Salty!

salt.jpg  You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

The Intolerance of the “Tolerant”

intolerance.jpg  Intolerance is the quickest route to social leprosy on the modern university campus. Intolerance simply cannot be tolerated. So argued University of Chicago Professor Allan Bloom in his courageous book, The Closing of the American Mind.1 By his account, a student could be known for promiscuity, drunkenness, profanity, laziness, and dishonesty and still be popular among his peers. But if he argued that homosexuality, Wicca, or any other deviant lifestyle or belief system was mistaken and harmful, then he was a marked man. At best, he was shunned, at worst, expelled and sued. The Lord of the Rings-Christian Myth

lord of the rings.jpg  In 1997, British readers voted The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien the “book of the century” in a national poll. The book’s victory startled and disturbed many academic and media elites. (One London reporter is said to have responded to the news with, “Dear oh dear. Dear oh dear oh dear.”) (more…)
