A lesson over Vienna sausages

david e price.jpg   by David E. Prince

LEXINGTON, Ky. (BP)–The Prince family rang in the second day of the New Year with a lunch of Vienna sausages, sliced cheese and chips. While certainly not the most upscale lunch cuisine, it was quite functional for a quick lunch amid a day of household labor. (more…)

On the Offensive—Pastor Pierre-Charles Toureille, 1941-1945

nazi.jpg   Jacob and Sonia Barosin walked the streets of Lunel, France, in despair. Jacob had been ordered by Vichy authorities—the “free” government set up by the Nazis in the south after the fall of France—to report within two days to an internment camp to be “deported” to Poland. Suddenly the Barosins came upon Mrs. Délie Toureille and informed her of their desperate plight. Later that afternoon, the Barosins met with her husband Pierre-Charles Toureille, pastor of the town’s French Reformed Church. Offering his aid, Toureille wrote a letter and told Jacob to give it to a certain official at the internment camp. “You take him this letter from me,” he said, “and we will pray and see.”1 (more…)

Divorce: A Blueprint for Disaster

divorce.jpg   13 And this second thing you do. You cover the LORD’s altar with tears, with weeping and groaning because he no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand. 14 But you say, “Why does he not?” Because the LORD was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant. 15 Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union? And what was the one God seeking? Godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and let none of you be faithless to the wife of your youth. 16 “For the man who hates and divorces, says the LORD, the God of Israel, covers his garment with violence, says the LORD of hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be faithless.”

Fossils and Frauds

fossil.jpg   On October 15, 1999, Stephen Czerkas, director of a dinosaur museum in Utah, and the National Geographic Society (NGS) announced that they had discovered Archaeoraptor liaoningensis (”ancient bird of prey from Liaoning”).1 They presented the fossil, acquired for $80,000 at an Arizona mineral show, as “a true missing link . . . [capturing] the paleontological ‘moment’ when dinosaurs were becoming birds.”2 Although National Geographic’s subsequent article “Feathers for T. Rex?”3 made grand claims, they soon discovered that the emperor had no clothes or, rather, that the T. Rex had no feathers! (more…)

Confronting Civil Government—John Murray (1898 – 1975)

john murray.jpg   John Murray, a native Scotsman, was the first professor of Systematic Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary (U.S.A.) and a minister in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. He was a scholarly exegete and profound theologian whose teaching and publications strengthened evangelicals in the battle with modernism during the twentieth century. In this extract, from a document entitled “The Relation of Church and State,” Murray provides ministers with helpful instruction on how to avoid being party political, whilst at the same time preaching directly on political issues. Murray begins by outlining the primary focus of the Church’s involvement in the political arena—the proclamation of the divine Word in all its fullness. The Church is not to do the job of the state, but it is to critique the state from a biblical standpoint. (more…)
