When Christians Rejected Homosexuality

Plato recounted a day when Socrates walked toward the Lyceum and ran into two of his friends, Hippothales and Ctesippus, grown men who were talking to a group of boys. Hippothales told Socrates that they often spoke to young boys and invited the philosopher to join the conversation. Socrates asked Hippothales which of the boys aroused his interest. “Each of us has a different fancy,” he replied. Socrates continued his query, “And who is yours?”1 This troubling account accurately depicts an unsavory portion of ancient Greek history—the toleration of pederasty, homosexual activity between a man and a boy. Greek men pursued, even courted, boys as young as twelve years old. “In Athens, for a boy to have a homosexual relationship with an adult was considered not only acceptable, but also, under certain conditions, socially approved.”2 (more…)

The Honorable Institution of Marriage
Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
Hebrews 13:4 (ESV)
Marriage is under assault everywhere. For instance in the United Kingdom, between 1971 and 2001, the number of people marrying fell by 38%, while simultaneously incidents of divorce nearly doubled. In 2002, 41% of births occurred outside of marriage and over 80% of 18 to 44 year olds surveyed approved of cohabitation, agreeing that “it is alright for a couple to live together without intending to get married.”1 (more…)

Men’s Bible Study Class
The next meeting of the men’s class on Bible study methods will be 7 AM, Saturday, August 30. Even if you do not come to the study, you can learn and practice this method to grow and stay fresh in your study. Men can come without doing the assignment and still learn. But you will learn more if you take the time to study and practice this method. (more…)

Racism among the Cults

Religious cults are known for misconstruing God, but the problem doesn’t stop with theology; it extends to ethics, and racism is often the byproduct. Those who miss the Lord are open to all sorts of absurd prejudice, as in the following: (more…)

Ephesians 5:31-32 (ESV) Today, many brides and grooms are trading in the traditional “till death do us part” for what they claim is a more realistic promise: “I’ll stay with you for as long as our love lasts,” “. . . for as long as our marriage shall serve the common good,” or “. . . until our time together is over.”1 Of course, the defenders of these new formulations are proud they represent “honesty,” but how noble can it be to promise someone you will love them until you do not? Indeed, the people making these watered-down vows are simply doing to marriage what society has done to virtually everything else—reducing it to mere taste and base personal preference. It was one of the more awkward moments in the presidential campaign. Senator John McCain was appearing on the ELLEN DEGENERES SHOW, and she was asking why McCain did not support same-sex “marriage.” A well-prepared DeGeneres made the usual arguments about inclusiveness, and compared those who reject same-sex “marriage” to those who once refused to allow women or blacks to vote. It was all about fairness, she said.
