Share the Gospel Tractfully

by Victor Benavides ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP)–I was in Nashville recently, and at the end of a long day of meetings I stopped at a convenience store for a late-night snack. I stood in line, paid for my ice cream, and passed a Gospel tract to the clerk who politely smiled and stuffed it into a pocket. I smiled and left. As I was opening my car door, a man yelled my way. “Great,” I thought, without turning around. “I’m exhausted and this guy’s going to want money. God, please help me talk to this man.” I turned around to face […]

“It is different when it’s your mother”

Ed- Peter Singer has been an extremely visible advocate for killing older folks when they lose quality of life, whether or not they are terminally ill. It is always painful watching a relative suffer from a degenerative illness. However, the angst is usually connected to the loved one’s discomfort rather than one’s own philosophical inconsistency. For such kairos moments test a person’s entire framework; will he take his own conclusions seriously? When such a moment occurred in Dr. Peter Singer’s life, his worldview was found wanting.

How to Gain Wisdom

by David Jeremiah EL CAJON, Calif. (BP)–A number of years ago, I attended a men’s retreat at which the speaker challenged us to begin a practice he said would change our lives dramatically. I was ready to write down a complex spiritual formula, and I have to admit I was initially a little disappointed at what I heard: “There are 31 chapters in the book of Proverbs. I challenge you to read a chapter a day each month for the next year. If you do that faithfully for a year, you will have read the book of Proverbs 12 times […]

One Issue Politics, One Issue Marriage, & the Humane Society

by John Piper No endorsement of any single issue qualifies a person to hold public office. Being pro-life does not make a person a good governor, mayor, or president, but there are numerous single issues that disqualify a person from public office. For example, any candidate who has endorsed bribery as a form of government efficiency would be disqualified, regardless of his party or platform. Or a person who endorsed corporate fraud . . . would be disqualified no matter what else he endorsed. Or a person who said that no black people could hold office—on that single issue alone […]

Do We Need a Pro-Life President?

by Penna Dexter DALLAS (BP)–Pro-life voters are being pressured to sacrifice, or somehow downplay, their pro-life convictions in the current presidential race. The argument goes something like: There is little a president can do to limit abortion. Don’t buy it. And don’t use it as an excuse to dismiss abortion in favor of issues you consider more important in choosing a president. Abortion may not be your top issue, or it may be equal with a couple of others. But in this wide-open nominating contest, we must be clear. The role of a president in protecting the sanctity of human […]
